A bit more family research about the Mountfords

My father also has the following to say about being a Mountford

Mountfords

The Oxford Dictionary of Surnames shows Mountford as
a) Shropshire and South : Saxon, from Mumma's Ford.
b) Staffordshire and Yorkshire : Norman, from Montfort-sur-Risle

The b's include me, by location. The noble Montforts will have, as custom ran, allowed their dependants to use the surname, as having no other. I have visited Montfort-sur-Risle and the physical type of the men there corresponds to that of my maternal grandfather, Samuel Mountford (Coatham, Redcar, Middlesbrough, Yorks.). Samuel M. married my grandmother Lily, who had the (presumably Norman) maiden name Ingledew.

I'm also posting this at genforum.com and the link to that is
